As my school explored women’s history, students were asked, Who is a woman who makes a difference? Children shared the names of many spectacular and amazing women: Michelle Obama, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Frida Kahlo, Harriet Tubman, Malala. But the answer that came up the most? “Mom.” As a mother and daughter, it shouldn’t have been so unexpected, and yet it was a surprise and a gift to hear so many children acknowledge the depth of love that moms give every day. So today’s highlight is a book that managed to take my breath away just in its depictions of brushing teeth and combing hair. In Me and Mama, Cozbi A. Cabrera captures the wonder of a child who wants to be “everywhere where mama is.”
This is a book about a Black mother and daughter living everyday life... quiet and extraordinarily full of oatmeal, rain boots, purple barrettes, and so much love. - SSL
